OpenFOAM Tutorial 7-10 October 2025
The Institute of Fluid Mechanics organised an OpenFOAM tutorial in the week October 7-10 (in the seminar room LSTM, Cauerstrasse 4, 91058 Erlangen). The course will be given by Dr. Marco Atzori, Politecnico di Milano, Italy.
The tentative schedule is as follows:
- Tuesday Oct 7: 9-13 Introduction, Methods, Code, Interface to OpenFOAM, simple meshing, installation, first case.
- Wednesday Oct 8: 9-13 Incompressible flow, running, postprocessing, statistics, running cases on a cluster, including CPU and GPU version, profiling.
- Thursday Oct 9: 9-13 Including more complex physics: temperature, free surfaces, and particles.
- Friday Oct 10: 9-13 discussions and some particular cases.
The course is intended for PhD students, and assumes familiarity with fluid mechanics, turbulence, and the basic idea of numerical methods and CFD. We will use OpenFOAM in a Linux environment (mainly OpenFOAM.org), with Python as the scripting language. It would be beneficial if participants could have a working installation of OpenFOAM, but that could also be addressed during the first day.
There is a lot of time for questions and discussions. Also, the schedule will be adapted depending on the background and interests of the participants.fds
